When two people come together (non-related) their DNA combines to create a new DNA type/child. If both parents carry the same DNA types (when brother/sister, relative/cousin) combine together and have children the DNA is the same. So if a disease or abnormal trait is already in the DNA that both parties has, then it is more likely to be passed onto the children. This will produce children that maybe abnormal. Genetics is a hit and miss type of science, with mother nature being the decider. Not all unions with a relative/cousin will result in abnormal children though but there is an increased risk.

The other half of the states in the US forbids first cousin marriage, but allows 2nd and below. There is not considered to be a significant risk of abnormal children for any cousin/cousin couples.

If you study history you will find that there were many problems when kings used to marry their relatives. DNA works best when you don't sleep with your relatives. It is possible that a child would be ok but you would also have to consider how society will view you if you slept with a relative. I also think if I am not wrong that there are laws that say incest is not welcome
